StepOut: Stargazing Weather StepOutside

Combines tonight's cloud cover, moonlight, astronomical twilight, and galactic-core height into one go-or-stay answer, then shows the best window, where to look, what to wear, and a camera starting point.

Core experience

The answer first, the evidence right behind it

Built for people deciding after dinner whether to go outside, for phone and camera hobbyists planning a night-sky shooting window, and for campers and families choosing the best evening. The first screen needs no astronomy vocabulary, while the detail stays available.

Tonight's verdict

Get a one-line "worth stepping outside / wait / stay in" answer in seconds, with its score, level, and reasons.

Composite sky timeline

Cloud cover, moon rise and set, and galactic-core altitude share one 18:00–06:00 timeline, so the window where they agree is circled for you.

Departure quick check

Where to look: azimuth and altitude. What to wear: feels-like temperature and wind. What to bring: equipment hints and an exposure starting point.

Heading compass

Open the compass to read device heading and point out the galactic-core direction. Heading is read only while the compass screen is open and is never written to disk.

Events and upcoming windows

Compare meteor showers and new-moon or full-moon dates against the next several nights so you can plan further ahead.

Places, cache, widgets

Save several observing places; weather cache is kept for 24 hours; the lock-screen or home-screen widget and Apple Watch share one summary.

Who is this for?

From one hesitation to one clear action

Deciding after dinner

Open the app, read tonight's verdict and best window, then decide what to wear and when to head out — no astronomy background needed.

Photographing the Milky Way

Check the galactic core's azimuth and altitude, take an exposure starting point, then tune it for your own camera and lens.

Camping or a family trip

Compare the next few nights and the upcoming events, pick the better evening, and keep the reminder local to your device.

Weak network or no weather data

The astronomy side is calculated offline on the device, so window, Milky Way, and moon phase remain available. Cloud cover is marked as unavailable, and a demo curve is labelled "demo data".

Frequently asked

Data, privacy, and limits

Does it guarantee I will see something?

No. It organizes weather and astronomy facts; it does not promise transparency, seeing, or visibility, and it does not make safety decisions.

Do I have to enable location?

No. Only when you explicitly choose "Current Location" does the app take one foreground location fix and use Apple's geocoding service for the place name. You can skip location or add a place manually.

Is any data uploaded?

There is no developer server, account, cloud sync, advertising, analytics, or tracking. Coordinates for a selected place, including one added manually, are sent to Apple WeatherKit for weather; only choosing "Current Location" triggers one foreground location fix and the Apple geocoding lookup. Places and the weather cache stay on this device.

Does it cost anything?

The current release is free, with no account, in-app purchase, subscription, paywall, or advertising.

Are the numbers on screen real?

Astronomy results are calculated on the device with a simplified model, and weather comes from Apple WeatherKit. When weather is unavailable and you turn on the demo curve, the interface clearly labels it as demo data.

How do I delete local data?

Delete a single place in Places, or use "Reset all data" in Settings to clear places, settings, cache, and notifications.
